I am beginning to worry that the goal is getting larger faster than the
patch is getting near completion. The original idea was good, so get the
basic fix in place and see how robust it is before chasing corner cases.
You are fixing, after all, what you called an "epic slur fail".
How about I adopt the patch and let Janek review
