Here are two images from the doc. To get a uniformly likeable appearance,
probably some variation of issue 3533 will be needed as well in order to
avoid irregular starting points for rasterization.
One positive side effect is that the png images compress better: when using
pngcrush on both files, the file with-3708 is reduced from 67394 bytes to
48000 bytes while the file without-3708 stays at 57849 bytes. That
suggests that it may make sense to pass the output from Ghostscript through
a pnglib based utility even when not rendering at increased resolution.
