Regarding comment #4: your trauma/prejudice should not extend towards "make
all", the default "make". That's necessary for compiling any change to
LilyPond, not just the documentation. It will not check @lilypond passages
embedded in the documentation like "make doc" would, but it _will_ flag
most Texinfo syntax errors.
Unless you were planning not to compile any change to LilyPond afterwards,
not running "make" is not avoidable anyway, and so there is no point in
postponing it until after sending a patch for review.
