A side remark: one expedient could be an x-point-stencil which is empty in
the Y interval, but has zero extent in the X interval. If everything was
working like one thought it may, such a stencil could serve horizontally as
an anchor.
Of course, everything is not likely to work like one thought it should, but
exploring that option and see where it gets one if one fixes bugs and
problems on the way might still be worthwhile.
