I don't have the time to check for this right now (need to focus on
something urgent at least one more day), but it's conceivable that this is
of the "one could have reasonably expected this to work" variety. If it
is, don't create a workaround but rather describe your expectations and how
they were thwarted: it will make more sense to bring LilyPond in line with
the expectations then.
