I think we still do not get the gist right here. It's more like
"Two variants of \lyricmode additionally set an associated synchronization
context. The more convenient \addlyrics immediately follows the Voice
context content it should be associated with, creating a Lyrics context of
its own. The more versatile \lyricsto requires both specifying the
associated Voice context by name and explicitly creating a containing
Lyrics context."
That makes it pretty clear which combinations make sense and which don't,
something which was rather hand-wavy previously.
