The "recommendations of Gould" are of course quite valid. The problem is
just that the code in place does not have enough information for doing this
robustly. As long as we don't do more than tweak parameters, tighter
placement leads to worse results when the melody lines are not focused
around the middle of the staves.
This might be interesting in connection with an engraver that works with
the results of the Melody_engraver and overrides the default rest
positions. It would not necessarily need C++/recompilation, but it
definitely would require quite a bit more code.
