Self_alignment_interface has a confusing name, some missing functionality,
bad code duplication and is not used consistently.
I had initially created issue 3239 for tracking improvements to alignment
interface, but that issue became a complete mess (my fault!) so i'm
creating a new one here, and a few other issues for some related fixes
(which are standalone enough to be reviewed on their own).
