Looking at the code, the code determines the size of "ex" by scaling down baseline-skip. Now ex is supposed to be the ex-height of a font, some sort of optical axis. Since different fonts are designed around different ex-heights, this tends to be a hardwired font metric.

The question is whether we have a chance of getting the actual font metric in time for creating the triangle.
