Right, the default behavior (no line-width option at all) for latex output
is to run latex on a dummy document where we use the same preamble as the
source document; if that fails, a default value of 550.0pt is used. For
texinfo output, some default value is used according to page size. I'm not
sure if the line-width option without any size argument was ever supported
as the usage documentation implies.
