To put this in perspective: generally, tie formatting in LilyPond is often
poor (sometimes even abysmal). This is simply a specific example of a
general problem - for some spacing configurations tie formatting engine
tries to use unfitting rules to determine tie shape and positioning. I've
seen output similar to this very often.
