I'm not sure how to verify, relative to the initial report, but LilyPond
should set this with rests as close to the center line as possible:
{ \override Staff.Rest.voiced-position = 0
<< { r8 g''4 g8 r g4 g8 } \\
{ d,4 r \stemUp b r } >> }
