I fixed this beautifully ten years ago. I spend a few weeks on finding good
heuristics and implementing it. In particular it fixed the rests, and made
sure a melody wouldn't be broken up into different solo, a due, etc. parts
(as much as
that is possible by the computer to find out).
The heuristics are rather complicated, but worked pretty well.
However it was never included, because it was too "complicated", even after
I put in a lot of comments on request.
So the broken, useless part-combiner is still used after ten years!
