Heikki has provided a comprehensive and well-considered addition to the
MIDI section of the NR which I think should be included. A number of these
undocumented facilities are useful, especially to the typesetting of vocal
scores, or perhaps full orchestral scores. In particular, setting
midiChannelMapping = #'instrument is very helpful when the number of staves
exceeds 15, and the pan, balance and expression controls could also find a
use when preparing vocal rehearsal aids.
As no one has progressed this in over 8 months I'll try drafting an update.
