Those programming errors _cannot_ be a consequence of this patch. They can
almost only be triggered by C++ coding.
So unless _other_ errors or differences occured (James?), this patch should
rather be on review.
I suspect issue 4360 to be involved with the recent spike in those
programming errors but it's not entirely reproducible, and I've already
rebased some other patches on the committed result with serious effort.
So I'm writing debugging code for this situation and hope that it will help
us get a hold of the issue (and make this situation more manageable in
future).
