But both are not accurate. Future notes are relative to the last pitch before the \octaveCheck but with an octave that would have made it pass the \octaveCheck.

Now the question is how much effort we should invest in explaining the error case. It's probably more relevant that an \octaveCheck that passes and gives no error/warning does not have any effect on the pitch of the next note: it's still relative to the last pitch before the \octaveCheck.
