For me, this is very much a question of finding a way to predictably and
efficiently move dynamics such as to reduce the amount of vertical space
needed, as may be found in all kinds of scores with tight layout. This
includes moving them partly or wholly into the staff. (Examples may be
found in http://imslp.org/wiki/2_Part_Songs,_Op.71_%28Elgar,_Edward%29
[Novello 1914, typesetting] or
http://imslp.org/wiki/Liebe,_Op.18_%28Cornelius,_Peter%29 [Breitkopf &
Härtel 1905, engraving], as well as on tight pages of typical orchestral
scores of the time)
It’s a pity that it has to be done manually, of course, but for the time
being we have to live with that.
