Unless someone volunteers to rewrite Feta from scratch, this doesn't
seem an option to me.

As I said before, going from metafont (overlapping penstrokes) to type1
(bezier outlines) is not trivial. See www.truetex.com -- meanwhile, if
you don't like textrace, have a go with pktrace. It is less kludgy.
