The compiling problem in Mandrake was caused by the PHP environment
variables, which are (some of them) :

  devfs=mount
  i=/etc/profile.d/xhost.sh
  nbservices=33
  out=/dev/vc/
  pc=0x21449c
  ph=9
  previous=N
  progress=yes
  pw=627
  px=86
  py=482
  quiet=yes
  res=800x600
  runlevel=5
  service=19
  splash=yes

They are ment for `Server-side scripting', `Command line useage of PHP',
and `Writing client-side GUI applications', as descripted in

  http://fi.php.net/manual/en/intro-whatcando.php

Thus, looks like the error is indeed in LilyPond side, which does does not
recognize the directory structure in `out' variable, but still uses it as a
part of the compiling directories.
