Right.  Theoretically, we need two different symbols for crescendo
hairpins (the horizontal line stands for the hairpin):

. The hairpin ends right before a note:

   A                   B                 C
   o                 | o               | o
   |                   |                 |
    -------------------------------------f

  Here, the hairpin is spanned between A and C

. The hairpin ends at the `duration end' of a note:

   A                   B                 C
   o                 | o               | o
   |                   |                 |
    -----------------------------------  f

  Here, the hairpin is spanned between A and B.
