These are reasonable suggestions, but please take a look at the manual:

where you see the feature already impelemented, though, the barre is on the
right side by default.

The markup of the diagram is already in a fairly complete state, therefore, the
developement is currently concentrated on the interface side. If you make some
serious typesetting with the markup, it is still considered experimental (since
it has not appeared in a stable branch) and one may use it only temporarily. It
(the syntax) will be stabilized for the next stable branch.

I can see that the appearance of fret diagrams allures a whole bunch of new
LilyPond users -- one more reason to get the feature implemented ;)
