What about extending the syntax for \< ... \! (or rather, the syntax for spanners) to provide commands which accept an argument like this:
c2\<<{s4} c2 | c1 \!!{s2..}
FWIW, I enthusiastically second this motion, particularly with regards to
ending a hairpin at the end of a note. Perhaps something like
c1\< | c\!!
(without any \...{foo} )could produce something like
c1\< | <c1 {s2... s32\>}>This would greatly simply editing (and simply reading!) Lilypond scores.
