There should be no reason to build it yourself. See previous announcements on Debian packages for LilyPond 2.3.x in the mailing list archives.
I'm not familiar with the details of the Debian installation, but the first step should be to run 'texhash' as root to make sure that the file name database is up to date. Next, check that you have the file ecrb10.tfm, among others in /usr/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/public/ec-fonts-mftraced/ (the directory path should be something like that) and that the command kpsewhich ecrb10.tfm returns the same path.
