My hunch is that the Apple-shipped pyobjc is clashing with my objc, but i'm not sure.

Can you check what the following commands say?

md5sum `find /Applications/LilyPond.app -name '_*.so'`
md5sum `find  /Library/Python/2.3/PyObjC/  -name '_*.so'`
md5sum /usr/bin/python
