that won't be possible.
Come to think of it, it might not even be that difficult: the
line-breaking (given a configuration of line-breaks, rearrange pointers)
and computing spacing just have to be a bit rearranged. I'll have a look
to see what needs to be done.

the user specifies a fixed vertical distance just for one or more

No, that's completely infeasible.
