I'm having second thoughts about using @samp{} for small input. For example, consider "absolute octave entry" (in 1.1.1)

http://opihi.cs.uvic.ca/~gperciva/lilypond/Documentation/user/lilypond/Absolute-octave-entry.html

The problem is that we use ' as part of the lilypond language. IMO, we shouldn't use @samp{} for the "lowercase letters a through g", since that might confuse people with octave marks.

Lower on the page, we discuss using single quote (`'') or comma (`,') characters. I think that we wouldn't lose any clarity -- and possibly add some -- if we simply write

"single quote (') or comma (,)"

(ie if we use @code{} for all input, regardless of short lengths)

As an added bonus, this clarifies the instructions for doc writers: put all lilypond input in @code{}.

Cheers,
- Graham
