Yes, you are right, I completely missed it (or rather I saw you talking about 
text editors and ignored the thread from then on)...

Yes, you are right, that was a texi2html problem, or rather a problem with my 
tweaking of how @example are processed in our .init file: I simply forgot to 
set the contents style to code, so all contents of @example were processed 
like normal text and those replacements were made. I've now re-added the code 
style for @example and those replacements are no longer done, so things 
should work again.
