Certainly not; it's just a matter of consistency in LilyPond syntax.

Oh, I never suspected that the current GrandStaff-like PianoStaff was
meant to be temporary. As Graham said, this closes the discussion; if
I may, I can't wait to see the nice features you mention implemented
:-)
