I can't answer this question.  It's beyond my understanding of musical
theory.

As a practical matter, I'd recommend implementing the simplest version
first.  Then the bells and whistles can be added later. If your code gets
90% of the needed uses, it's helpful even if it can't do the last 10%.

It's good to keep this kind of discussion on the list, rather than shifting
it to private email, so I've copied it back to the list.
