Delegating work is the best thing to do, failing that I would just
do a parallel checkout of stable (I always have web,stable,dev
alongside eachother), do something like
git clone --ref lilypond gnu:lilypond.git lilypond-2.12
[assuming you have in ~/.gitconfig
[url "ssh+git://git.savannah.gnu.org/srv/git/"]
insteadof = gnu:
]
