long long is 64 bit even on most 64-bit machines 

The C standard just says it has to be at least as long as long.

i.e, 1 == sizeof (char) < sizeof (short) <= sizeof(int) <= sizeof
                        (long) <= sizeof (long long)

and sizeof (short) >= 2
