Of course, we might want to consider (for the sake of non-native english speakers) actually deprecating both i.e. and e.g., and replacing them with "that is" and "for example". -- Oo. No thanks; only because while I see 'i.e.' and 'e.g' as an English speaker I don't actually 'read' them (if you see what I mean). If I were to see 'for example' or 'that is' everywhere it would drive me bonkers! They are also good visual signifiers that are easily scanned when reading a document.
