I admit that i'm not experienced with staves that stop and start in
the middle of line.  I thought it looked weird, but i don't insist on
changing it; the most important thing is to make barlines look nice
on-screen.

I guess it's (partly) because in LilyPond everything is rounded :)
It's the part of "Lily-looks".
