Instead of dontTreatOpenStringsSpecially, something like omitOpenStrings or skipOpenStrings looks less like an active special action for open strings, and maybe normalOpenStrings or fingerOpenStrings or fretOpenStrings suggests that the point is to include them in the normal calculations instead of treating them exceptionally.
