I'm no longer sure about this: For example, if you use this reduced example << \new Staff = "ossia" { \stopStaff s1*6 } \new Staff \relative c' { c4 b c2 e4 f e2 g4 a g2 \break c4 b c2 << { g4 a g2 } \context Staff = ossia { \startStaff g4 e8 f g2 \stopStaff } >> e4 d c2 } >> it is not easy to decide whether the bar number should be moved to the non-ossia staff. So maybe a warning in the documentation is more appropriate which says that \startStaff and \stopStaff might cause issues, in combination with an improved documentation example. Werner
