I would be good if more people try the MacPorts installation. The lilypond-devel version lists gcc8 as a library dependency, so that speaks for it, rather than trying to use XCode clang, which is not the real one, but an Apple inhouse version of unknown relation to the real one, and I recall you had some problems with getting it to compile with clang. The one you use now I think is gcc4.2, which is the last real gcc that Apple had, in later versions, this name defaults to clang. I think too that it might be better to switch to say Frescobaldi as the official LilyPond editor if you need one, though I haven't used it.
