I have (if I understand you correctly) the exact opposite
problem. I often have to do < a'2 { s4.\> \!s8 } > to make
the crescendo wedges come out nicely, but then I also have
to insert empty _ words at appropriate spots in the lyrics.
Is there a way to avoid this hassle?
