Just to avoid all confusion, you (Aaron) shouldn't have changed your \version number manually. If you ran convert-ly -e template.ly, it should have produced a template that works with 1.8.x. After making a backup copy, try changing the \version back to 1.6.0, then run convert-ly on it. If that new version works, let that be the template for all your future pieces.
