This probably means that someone else should step forward and maintain
and/or replace the lyric alignment code, right?

I didn't even know this, so I really shouldn't volunteer here.
Besides, I can't even get 1.8 to compile.

I *do* know that there are two different conventions for beaming of
vocal pieces.  The traditional (and, IMHO, most easily read) way is to
beam in accordance with the lyrics, with or without additional slurs;
the modern approach uses standard (instrument) beaming regardless of
the lyrics, and indicates melismatas using slurs.

I prefer the traditional method myself, but of course it only works
perfectly when the melisma consists of notes shorter than a quarter.
Workaround: "[c4( d8 e )d] c" (that would be "c4-[-( d8 e d-)-] c" or
something in the new syntax, but I'm stuck with 1.6 here) works for me
;)
