is there any chance to extend auto beaming to support "beam groups" as in
#(override-auto-beam-setting '(end * * * *) 1 4)

f-> e d \set stemRightBeamCount=#1 f
\set stemLeftBeamCount=#1 e d f e
d g \set stemRightBeamCount=#1 f
\set stemLeftBeamCount=#1 e d c b a
That's a lot of clutter, especially if you've lots of similar grouped
notes.
