:
\include "defs.ly"
This is my interpretation of the phrase 'include-mvmt1:/Users/spamguy/tchai_op35': include directory mvmt1, which is located in /Users/spamguy/tchai_op35. This is a valid statement.
Huh? What do you mean with `your interpretation'?
What I thought I was reading from the output. 'My understanding' would have been a better phrase.
I'm almost sure that I do not see what you mean, but just to be very clear, the PATH snippet:
include-mvment1:/Users/spamguy
is interpreted by LilyPond (and probably everybody else) as, well, a PATH snippet with two search directories: ./include-mvmnt1 and /User/spamguy.
I think I'm getting you. include-XYZ should be a complete directory path, and not based off the current directory? If so, then:
Yossarian:~/tchai_op35 spamguy$ lilypond-book --process='lilypond-bin -I include-Users/spamguy/tchai_op35/mvmt1' --output=out/ tchai_op35_book.tex
...means to search in the current directory (Users/spamguy/tchai_op35) and the supplied path (Users/spamguy/tchai_op35/mvmt1)? Trying this doesn't work either, so I must be missing something still.
