Sorry for the noise, I fould the culprit:
the standalone snippets were (erroneously) built with the latest
self-compiled lilypond, whereas lilypond-book is an older version
that did not find the font.

\override LyricText.font-name = "Mala's Handwriting"
}
to the .ily file, but there's no difference.
Properly included in a \layout { ... } environment, of course.
