The other solution would have been \new OneStaff { \new Lyrics \skip 1*8 \new Lyrics \lyricsto "..." { } } but, uh, the respective issue is still on review or countdown. That one should be less awkward. And the problem is that once a \lyricsto iterator ends, its containing context is usually terminated. So the thinking around the corner likely only works for a starting skip, not an ending one.
