Sincerely, Johan _________ To me it looks like you have some general problem with the teTeX package, rather then a LilyPond specific problem.
Try to run the following commands: latex sample2e dvips sample2e gv sample2e.ps
This should show a 3 page document with both text and some math in it. If it doesn't you could try to reinstall the teTeX package or check the Debian help.

This sounds very strange! First of all, I would recommend you to upgrade to the latest stable version 2.2.x (see instructions at www.lilypond.org on how to get a package for Debian).
I hope you have realized that ly2dvi has been renamed to lilypond (and the old lilypond to lilypond-bin). Try running lilypond --verbose thefile.ly and see if the printouts give any hints.
