In addition to the completion head engraver (David's mail), I'd pack the notes
without shift in a variable, like
variable = { a2 b2 }
And use
r4 \variable r4
or
r8 \variable r8 r4
Or whatever you'd like in the score.
Just leave out the bar checks, they'll throw warnings ...
