But in general I would say: yes, this kind of stuff should definitely be good to do with LilyPond. But I wouldn't expect it to be "beginner-level". But much depends on what you really need. It *may* be that all you need is one complicated Scheme function - and then there are good chances that someone finds the challenge interesting and helps you on this list.
