You can certainly insert bar checks in the lyrics, just as you do it in
ordinary music:

text = \lyricmode{ Ah! vous | dir -- ai -- | je ma | man | }

If you do that, LilyPond will issue a warning if the places where you
put the | do not coincide with the bar lines.

I'm not sure if this is what you ask for.

Hi all,

I was wondering why lyrics aren't subdivided into measures to make it
easier to keep track of what lyrics fit what notes?

I have a feeling that there must be a reason, because this is a
convention that holds true for many music notation systems, including
Finale.

Is there therefore a strong reason NOT to include measures in lyrics
blocks, or is it just a convention?

Thanks
Aaron
