Complement for those of us using Mac OS X:
the fonts files should be placed in:
/Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/share/lilypond/current/fonts/otf
and:
/Applications/LilyPond.app/Contents/Resources/share/lilypond/current/fonts/svg
respectively.
