Dear Larry,
tags seem to work here: The problem occurs where you set TabStaff
properties. This setting should be removed when you have no TabStaff.
If you tag the line in melody:
\tag #'tab \set TabStaff.minimumFret = #0
and remove the tagged parts when using melody:
\new Staff { \removeWithTag #'tab \melody }
that works.
I agree, it would be nicer if such settings would not automatically
create contexts which are not used.
