The Berne Convention officially sets international copyright duration
to life of the author plus 50 years, but nearly all countries have
extended that to "life plus 70".
On this list
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries%27_copyright_lengths#Table_of_copyright_durations_by_country>,
the number of countries that are "life+50" is well over fifty, maybe
close to a hundred (I stopped counting!). Add to that all the
countries that are listed simply as "Berne" — which currently is
"life+50" — and I'm not sure "nearly all countries" is an accurate
assessment of the situation.
I just did a quick web search and found
https://www.rightsdirect.com/international-copyright-basics/, but of
course neither that site nor Wikipedia would be considered a valid
source for legal information or advice. Suffice to say, international
copyright law is an already messy world, further muddled by too many
greedy corporations. That said, I respect the rights of all artists and
feel no desire to infringe copyrights in an attempt to thumb my nose at
lawmakers or the aforementioned corporations. If the extra twenty years
mattered that much, I would move country. Then again, at the rate
things are going, I might be jumping ship for other reasons. But as I
already have a nasty headache at this point, I can only hope that we
switch the conversation to something more pleasant. :)
